ABOUT US

Our Vision and Story

My name is Scott Parkinson, and I founded Poynton Drum School in 2015. Today, Poynton Drum School teaches over 150 students in Primary and Secondary schools in Poynton and the surrounding area. We also teach over 100 students every week in lessons outside of school.

I tried many instruments early in childhood but eventually discovered my passion for drums. As no drum lessons were available in my local area, I resorted to teaching myself for several years.

During high school and music college, I was fortunate enough to be taught by three incredible teachers. They had a substantial positive impact on my life and fuelled my passion for the drums. Because of them, I slowly began building a career as a musician.

Learning positive hobbies with positive role models is one of the most beneficial things a young person can do to improve their future.

I am proud to hear that all my students consider me a role model. This motivates me to continue teaching drums and percussion. I aim to provide enjoyable, inspiring, and informative learning settings for adults and children.

Meet Our Tutors

Scott Parkinson

After completing my music studies at Manchester Music College, I embarked on a music career encompassing performing, recording, teaching, and touring venues and festivals throughout the UK and Europe. I’ve played with various bands spanning genres such as Rock, Soul, Reggae, and Country. Teaching has become my top priority as I have developed a passion for interacting with and influencing students of all ages. I am now a full-time peripatetic tutor and drum school owner, offering lessons privately and in schools around Stockport and Cheshire.

I also run an after-school percussion club. It’s not your typical percussion club – we create rhythmic parts on various percussive instruments and play them along to selected rock and pop songs. It creates an exhilarating new aspect of the music, elevating its sound to an epic level.

Alex Pierce

Alex Pierce is a multi-instrumentalist, artist, and teacher born and based in Manchester who has also lived in London, Bergen, and Kyoto over the years.

Alex began drumming at age 11, led by a sudden desire to express himself rhythmically and took regular lessons until age 17. At that age, he had begun playing in the Egyptian Hip-Hop band, rapidly gaining exposure and recognition. They performed at festivals such as Glastonbury, Leeds, and Reading, as well as touring Europe and beyond!

As a drummer, he has over a decade of professional performing and recording experience, playing and recording in several other bands, spanning genres from indie and post-punk to experimental jazz and country.

Alex is not only an experienced drummer but also a skilled educator. He has two years of experience teaching primary school classrooms and currently teaches drum lessons to 60 students in both school and private settings as part of Poynton Drum School. All his students highly regard him for his expertise, teaching abilities and friendliness.

Will Sage

A graduate of Salford University, Will brings over 16 years of experience in the music industry and a passion for teaching. He is experienced in drum notation up to grade six and skilled in a wide range of styles, including rock, metal, jazz, drum and bass, and Afro-Cuban rhythms.

In addition to his teaching, Will is a performer and producer, known for his live jungle drum and bass project, Amen Sage. He has played at major UK festivals like Balter and Eden and holds a monthly DJ residency at The Old Abbey Taphouse. Will also runs Union Sound, a Manchester-based sound system collective.

His diverse experience—both as a performer and educator—allows him to offer dynamic, tailored lessons for beginners and intermediate students alike. We’re thrilled to have him on our team and share his expertise with you!

Grenville

Grenville is a professional session musician, songwriter, and teacher with a wealth of experience both on stage and in the classroom. Having studied at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA), he went on to carve out an impressive career as a drummer, guitarist, and vocalist.

Over the years, Grenville has worked with some of the country’s top artists, including Liam Gallagher, Cherry Ghost, and Isaac Gracie – performing at festivals worldwide, recording on charting albums, and even playing Glastonbury.

Alongside his performing career, Grenville has spent many years teaching drums, guitar, and music in schools and academies across the UK. He has guided students through Rockschool grades, songwriting, and performance coaching, always bringing energy, creativity, and encouragement to every lesson.

As a tutor, Grenville combines his real-world industry knowledge with a friendly, down-to-earth approach that inspires students of all ages to love music and reach their full potential.

We’re so excited for our students to learn from his expertise, passion, and infectious enthusiasm for drumming.
